The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced earlier this week that they are working with public health officials from numerous states, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella infections.

Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium that is found worldwide in warm and cold-blooded animals, including humans. Infections from the bacteria can be caused by eating contaminated foods and by transmission from animals to humans. According to numerous media reports, the Salmonella from the latest outbreak has been traced to tainted eggs.

The CDC has received approximately 200 reports of infections each week during the past two months, about 4 times the typical amount. A company from Iowa that produces eggs has already recalled close to 400 million eggs. Chickens are known to be able to pass the pathogen to their eggs during the egg laying process.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest food pathogen testing laboratories, has extensive expertise in testing for Salmonella and other dangerous pathogens. “Hundreds of people are known to have recently become ill from Salmonella,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “Thousands more may have become ill and not been diagnosed properly. Food manufacturers, distributors, retailers and citizens can have any questionable eggs or other food products tested by one of EMSL’s state-of-the-art food testing laboratories.”

Exposure to Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within 12 to 72 hours of exposure. The infection, known as Salmonellosis, typically lasts from 4 to 7 days. Some infected people require hospitalization and there is the possibility that the infection can spread from the intestines into the blood stream and beyond.
