EMSL Analytical Inc. Validates the Technology to Identify Legionella pneumophila serotype 1 strains.

Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1) is the causative agent for roughly 90% of legionellosis reported in North America. Recent advances in DNA sequencing have allowed for the identification of discrete strains of Lp1. Comparing Lp1 strains using DNA sequencing allows for a rapid determination of an association between environmental and clinical isolates, helping epidemiologists to identify the source of an outbreak.

EMSL has validated and is performing Legionella Sequence Based Typing from the European Working Group on Legionella Infection’s (EWGLI) methodology. In addition EMSL will also offer the Monoclonal Antibody Typing protocol for Lp1 strains developed by CDC.

According to CDC, each year an estimated 8,000-18,000 cases of Legionnaires’ Disease occur in the U.S. with fatality rates between 5 to 40%. Of those who survive, there are often serious long term health consequences after recovery. Legionnaires’ Disease is caused by the inhalation of aerosolized water contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It is an illness that is completely preventable provided routine monitoring and maintenance of potable water and cooling tower water systems are conducted.
