Graduates flood already overcrowded career choices

WEBWIRE

- More than 1 in 5 graduates are planning on working in Marketing
- Other sectors are almost entirely spurned by the student populous
- Only 1 in 10 graduates don’t have a clear career path in mind

GradFutures’ latest survey has shown that graduates are more focused than ever on their career goals. 9 out of 10 university students and recent graduates surveyed said that they have a definite career path in mind, either that they intend to follow, or that they have already embarked upon.

This is good news, but there are side effects: 1 in 5 (21.4%) students and graduates are intending to find a job in Marketing. This news comes at a time when marketing budgets are still recovering from the cuts of the recent recession. It is unfortunate that so many have chosen a profession that is already oversubscribed, while industries such as Chemicals, Utilities and Food Production see only minimal interest (1.6%, 2.6% and 3.2% respectively). It is unclear whether this is due to poor advice from universities’ careers services or a failure by the undersubscribed industries to market themselves effectively and to engage both students and graduates. It may, however, simply be that there are only a very small number of graduates suitable for such positions.

GradFutures’ CEO Ian Sprackling says, “It is reassuring that these findings show that today’s graduates have a strong sense of direction. Nevertheless, it remains clear that there may be issues with numerous sectors failing to engage properly with the career aspirations of students and graduates. It is vital that these industries strive to inject highly skilled, fresh talent into their organisations.”

About the study

The findings are based on an analysis of 323 students and recent graduates from across the UK.
