Earlier this year students at a New York City’s Trinity High School began a science project to test food items to determine if they were actually what the food labels claimed them to be. Working with scientists from the American Museum of Natural History and the Rockefeller University a total of 66 food items were analyzed utilizing DNA testing technologies. Tests showed that 1 in 6 items were mislabeled.

Mislabeled items included sheep’s milk cheese which was actually from cow’s milk and sturgeon caviar which was actually from the Mississippi paddlefish. Accidental, or deliberate, mislabeling of food products is believed to be a major problem and several media outlets have run national stories on the topic over the last several years.
