“Helloooooo, Dayton…!” Kenny Chesney Kicks Off The Road & The Radio To Universal Acclaim
Nashville, TN: With the #1 song in the country for the third straight week, Kenny Chesney made life reflect music - “Living In Fast Forward,” if you will - as he rocked the sold-out house at Dayton, Ohio’s Nutter Center last night to kick-off his 2006 The Road & The Radio Tour. With the crowd on their feet for the entirety of his 2-hour-plus set, playing to his own strengths and connecting hard with the fans.
According to The Dayton Daily News Carol Simmons, “He launched into a high energy show that didn’t serve up its first ballad, which many fans consider to be Chesney’s specialty, for a good 30 minutes… What makes Chesney so effective: his ballads say what women want to hear and what men want to say, and his party songs capture everybody’s desire to kick back and enjoy life to its fullest.”
“I don’t know about anybody else,” says the soft-speaking 25 million seller with a big laugh, “but I had the time of my life out there. When you don’t know, when you’re gearing up, you can’t be sure… You can hope, but you don’t know ’til that light comes up and you see their faces. And man, did those fans look great, and sound even better.”
In hand for opening night was his buddy and fellow-award nominee Uncle Kracker, who reprised their 7 week #1 and title track to Chesney’s quadruple platinum When The Sun Goes Down, as well as singing a few more with the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year. Though not officially part of the bill - which includes multiple Academy of Country Music Awards nominees Sugarland and reigning Country Music Association Horizon Award winner Dierks Bentley - Kracker’s surprise appearance probably won’t be limited to Dayton, given the fun the pair had onstage opening night.
“There just aren’t people in the world like Kracker,” says Chesney. “And any time he wants to come out here and sing with us, we’re gonna let him. We have more fun when he’s with us… He has a good time… it’s just one of those things, so yeah, people should never be surprised to see Matt come rolling out of the wings at just the right spot in the song.”
Drawing on songs from across his career, Chesney is pulling four songs from his nearly triple platinum The Road & The Radio for this year’s set list… and he’s also mixing up his always possible medley. Beyond all that, it’s a 120 minute free-for-all that moves fast and leaves the crowd screaming and rocking for more.
With nine stadiums on the books for this summer - including a return to Boston’s Gillete Stadium and a hometown play at Nashville’s Titans Coliseum - Chesney’s gonna be burning up the road the same way he has been burning up the radio. “Living In Fast Forward” may not be for everyone, but for Kenny Chesney, it’s the only way to move.
