Bids Soar for Jenny’s (867-5309) Phone Number Selling on eBay

WhatSellsBest.com, a website tracking rare and unusual items selling on eBay, is reporting bids for a popular ’phone number’ mentioned in a 1980’s hit song have exceeded $49,000 in an auction that ends April 18, 2010.

The phone number, ’867-5309’ was made famous by lyrics sang in the 1982 hit ’Jenny’ by Tommy Tutone.

According to James Massey, publisher of WhatSellsBest.com, it’s not the first time a number matching ’Jenny’s’ has been posted to sell on eBay, in fact it’s happened several times before.

Massey stated; “One ’Jenny phone number’ auction took place in early 2009, and attracted international attention before it ended with a high bid of $186,000.”

Massey added; “Selling the number isn’t as easy as most would think.” He recalled a New York Times article written in 2004, where a Manhattan law student (With a 212 area code) tried to sell his ’Jenny number’ on eBay.

“Apparently he received bids as high as $100,000, before his phone provider stepped in to dispute his ownership rights. Understandably, eBay had no option, other than shutting the auction down due to the ownership dispute.”

At that time (2004) the NYT article quoted a spokesman for the Federal Communications Commission, as stating phone numbers were ’public resources’’ which ’’are not owned by carriers or their customers.’’ But the article also stated the F.C.C. did not rule out a number being sold as part of a business.

In the case of the 2009 ’Jenny’ phone number auction. The seller stated the phone number was being included with the sale of his DJ business.

In the current auction, the seller is stating (in the listing) the phone number is being included (free) with the sale of several website domain names, that also include the ’Jenny number’ within their names.
