Los Alamitos, CA

In the Los Angeles neighborhood of Carson’s Carousel some 285 single-family homes sit on top of what was once a 50-acre tank farm operated by one of the world’s largest oil companies. From 1924 until 1966 the land that now makes up the neighborhood was filled with storage containers holding crude oil.

Some residents now say their yards smell like a gas station and others are concerned about health effects to their families and property values. During the summer of 2009 officials came across the problem and recognized there may be health risks to area residents. Since that time testing has commenced and a legal battle has been launched against the former landowners. Property owners are seeking financial compensation and relocation.

The Los Angeles Water Quality Control Board is managing the testing program that includes soil sampling outside of the residences and air testing in the homes. A major concern is that oil products leaked into the ground and are volatizing. Due to the nature of the potential contamination this evaporating process may go on for many years.

LA Testing, one of California’s largest environmental testing laboratories, has been providing soil and air testing services and supplies for all types of environmental testing needs. When oil enters the ground it is composed of numerous chemicals. Some of these chemicals, such as benzene, are known to be carcinogenic.

“For families that settled in this area it has created a major concern for their wellbeing and value of what for many is their biggest asset, their homes,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Homeowners, industry and state regulators can utilize our testing laboratory to answer their environmental questions about oil products, hydrocarbons and the many chemicals associated with them.”
