Money saving website – Quoteboffin.co.uk – is calling for greater backing of mobile TB treatment units that help care for homeless people in and around London.

Health ministers announced today that funding is still being sought and is due to run out in December despite the unit successfully diagnosing 400 cases of Tuberculosis across the city.

In order to keep the unit running, a number of primary care trusts in London must each club together a small amount of money. The trusts have yet to co-operate on the matter.

It’s up to specialist facilities such as the mobile TB unit not only to seek out and eradicate this potentially deadly disease but also to maintain the well being of one of society’s most vulnerable groups.”

When the unit began operating in 2005, London had twenty times the rate of the lung disease than anywhere else in the UK while 50 people were becoming infected every week. The unit currently tests 300 people a day and can produce a diagnosis within 30 seconds.

Although the services of the unit focus primarily on those at high risk within excluded groups, QuoteBoffin.co.uk emphasised that the disease does not just affect the socially excluded.

Ministers are hoping that continued pressure from the House of Lords will help persuade the London primary care trusts to allocate the funding needed for the mobile unit to remain operational.
