‘My Very First Hyper-V’ initiative opens door for SMBs to take advantage of server virtualization

Munich - Fujitsu today announced a new initiative aimed at helping small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) take advantage of the business-boosting benefits of switching to server virtualization. ‘My Very First Hyper-V’ combines hardware and software components to provide an affordable, easy-to-manage entry point to server virtualization, offering SMBs significantly-reduced fixed and operational costs, as well as increased system flexibility and availability.

The initiative, developed jointly by Fujitsu and Microsoft Corp., is intended to help SMBs maximize their investments in IT hardware and software. In addition, ‘My Very First Hyper-V’ delivers investment protection by using the latest Fu-jitsu PRIMERGY x86 servers and ETERNUS DX disk storage systems as a flexible, expandable platform for introdu-cing a new virtualized IT infrastructure built on the virtualization technology Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and managed by Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2. Server virtualization provides an effective way to harness and optimize processing capacity and efficiency company-wide, and to keep a lid on power and administrative costs. By switching to virtualization and running fewer, better-utilized servers in Hyper-V environ-ments, SMBs can expect to reduce hardware, operating and energy costs.

“Although virtualization is becoming increasingly accessible to small and mid-size businesses, it has not always been as simple and affordable as many companies need it to be,” according to Jens-Peter Seick, senior vice-president, x86 Server Business at Fujitsu Technology Solutions. “The ‘My Very First Hyper-V’ initiative is designed to give SMBs the confidence that they have a functional, scalable and reliable solution for rapid adoption of server virtualization, at the right price, and with a clear and simple roadmap for future growth.”

Available immediately from authorized Fujitsu resellers, the My Very First Hyper-V initiative provides a choice of additional components to best meet individual customer needs. Foundation stones are Fujitsu’s proven and reliable PRIMERGY x86 servers incorporating Intel virtualization technology, Fujitsu ETERNUS DX family disk storage systems, and the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system with Hyper-V virtualization technology, which includes support for live migration. Fujitsu is the first vendor globally to offer the OEM edition of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 Workgroup Edition (SCVMM WGE), a central management console providing SMBs with effective and simple administration of the entire virtualized environment.

Bill Laing, Microsoft corporate vice president, Windows Server and Solutions, says: “Microsoft is committed to provi-ding products and solutions that help small and mid-size companies succeed and reduce costs. Many SMBs are aware of the efficiency and flexibility of virtualization, but have been reluctant to make the switch due to concerns about cost and complexity. Through the ‘My Very First Hyper-V’ initiative, Fujitsu and Microsoft are helping SMBs take the first step with a cost-effective virtualization platform that offers enterprise features like live migration and com-ponents that are designed to work well together.”

Customers may order ‘My Very First Hyper-V’ immediately from participating distributors and resellers. Fujitsu part-ners can also choose the combinations of components which best meet their customers’ needs, backed by the offer of technical training and customizable sales materials from Fujitsu.
