California and Southwestern United States Facing Chemical, Mold and Sewage Contamination Issues from Flooding

A series of strong winter storms have been pounding the West Coast and Southwest. Areas around Los Angeles have already received almost 5 inches of rain with an even larger storm scheduled to arrive today. Parts of Arizona are expected to receive as much, if not more, rain this week than they received all of last year.

Hundreds of people have already been ordered to evacuate their homes for fear of mudslides below fire ravaged hills in California and the entire region has rain scheduled up until this weekend.

As the waters crest and eventually recede some property owners who venture back into their homes and businesses may be greeted by flooded properties and ruined belongings. Many other property owners are likely to come across roof leaks and other structural issues that have allowed water to enter their properties.

Properties flooded not only have to deal with water damage issues, but also environmental concerns since flood waters can contain all types sewage, bacteria and chemical contaminants that end up in the properties. The moisture can also lead to mold growth in as short as 24 hours causing indoor air quality (IAQ) problems.
