Last month it was reported in Detroit that close to 1,000 students and volunteers may have been exposed to deadly asbestos at a historic Detroit landmark. The volunteers worked over 75,000 hours this summer cleaning up the aging Michigan Central Train Station.

The historic landmark has been an eyesore for area residents and its owner that had been under pressure to begin renovations. The volunteers spent the summer shoveling and sweeping debris, but state inspectors have now discovered asbestos in some of the materials that were handled.

Since asbestos can be easily aerosolized when disturbed it has raised great concern from many of the students and volunteers. The asbestos could have been breathed during the renovations which could dramatically increase one’s chance of developing lung cancer. Cancers associated with asbestos exposure sometimes take decades to appear.

People who may have been exposed to asbestos are encouraged by asbestos medical professionals to consider getting a complete pulmonary function test, physical examination and a low dose chest x-ray. According to health experts these tests should be repeated at 5 year intervals for at least 3 series to monitor for any future medical problems.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest asbestos testing laboratories, has almost three decades of asbestos testing experience. “EMSL’s Ann Arbor, Michigan laboratory has been providing asbestos testing solutions for area residents and industries for many years,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “Whenever a renovation project is about to begin and there are concerns about existing asbestos contamination, a simple sample of dust or piece of suspect material may be all that is needed to prevent asbestos exposure,” Frasca continued.
