Maine’s Senator Susan M. Collins Visits Ironwood Maine

Maine’s Senator, Susan M. Collins, an advocate for children, recently visited Ironwood Maine and toured the facility with Rod and Marion Rodrigue, Ironwood Maine Chairman/CEO and President/Director respectively.

During the extensive tour, the Senator was able to interact with the residents. The residents readily shared with her some of their learning experiences. In some instances, residents talked about their ability to work together as reporters, news columnists and photographers to produce a bi-monthly newsletter that that showcases events, people, programs as well as shared experiences.

One particular spot on the tour was a favorite - the Sugar Shack. Ironwood Maine residents built the sugar shack, tapped the maple trees, collected the sap and boiled it out, ready for bottling. The Sugar Shack project helped the teens build self-confidence, see a project from start to finish, and create a deep sense of accomplishment.
