TestAmerica Discusses Data Quality Assurance on Vapor Intrusion Investigations at the 2009 Florida Remediation Conference

TestAmerica’s Air Product Manager Christopher Anderson, will demonstrate techniques for ensuring data quality in Vapor Intrusion (VI) investigations. The presentation will be held at the 15th Annual Florida Remediation Conference on October 16, 2009 in Orlando, Florida.

Since the original EPA Guidance on Vapor Intrusion was published in 2002, empirical data from Vapor Intrusion investigations have shown that the VI pathway is significantly more complex to evaluate than previously indicated. A comprehensive approach to Vapor Intrusion investigations was developed in 2007 by the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) that evaluates and addresses risk potential for this exposure pathway. While many states are in the process of updating and publishing their own guidance, many still do not adequately address the subject of chemical analysis and data quality, associated with evaluating the risk exposure to human health.

The presentation will evaluate the impacts of data quality introduced from sample media, canister cleaning/certification, flow controller cleaning/certification, canister maintenance, sampling protocols, data review and non-VI sources. The presentation will also introduce collected empirical data that verifies the effectiveness of best practices used in commercial air laboratories for canister and flow controller cleaning and certification.

Mr. Anderson has over 17 years of experience in the environmental industry and is currently a technical expert on all aspects of conducting and managing air projects. He is also a member of the Massachusetts DEP’s Indoor Air Workgroup that will draft new “Vapor Intrusion” guidance for the state.
