New SPEC world records underscore performance advantages of mid-range PRIMERGY x86 rack and tower servers

Munich, Fujitsu today announced that its PRIMERGY rack and tower servers have set two new world records for dual-socket x86 server computing performance, underlining their ability to take over business application tasks from hungrier, more expensive four-socket systems.

Benchmarks underline that dual-socket x86 servers are increasingly suited to running mainstream business applications, previously the domain of four-socket servers. New world records established by x86 PRIMERGY RX300 rack and TX300 tower servers in the respected independent SPECcpu2006 and SPECjbb2005 benchmarks confirm the extended capabilities of the two-socket mid-range systems.

Says Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice President, x86 Server Product Unit at Fujitsu Technology Solutions: “Performance gains of the fifth-generation PRIMERGY TX300 and RX300 dual-socket servers are underlined by the latest benchmarks. Today, there’s no question that for increasingly complex business applications, making the switch to dual-socket servers will provide significant savings in purchase and operational costs, without impacting productivity.”

Top server analyst Thomas Meyer notes that organizations can make smart choices and save on infrastructure costs. Meyer, Vice President, EMEA Systems and Infrastructure Solutions at IDC EMEA, commented: “With the optimization of server systems right up to the application level, customers have the opportunity to re-think their investment needs and can opt for server products which show significant increases in price performance.”

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) has developed the SPECjbb2005 and SPECcpu2006 benchmarks. SPECcpu2006 comprises of SPECint2006 and SPECfp2006 benchmarks and provides an industry-standardized, CPU-intensive benchmark, stressing a system’s processor, memory subsystem and compiler, designed to provide a comparative measure of compute-intensive performance across the widest practical range of hardware using workloads developed from real user applications. SPECjbb2005 (Java Server Benchmark) benchmarks and evaluates the performance of server-side Java.

New Intel Xeon W5590 processors lie at the heart of the record-setting PRIMERGY servers, running at a clock-speed of 3.33GHz, with 8MB of Level 3 cache memory and 2 DIMM memory modules per channel running at 1333MHz.

The record-taking PRIMERGY RX300 and TX300 system configurations are available to order from October 2009.

SPECcpu2006 results will be published tomorrow (August 19) when full test details will be available on the SPEC website at www.spec.org. Fujitsu has submitted the SPECjbb2005 results to SPEC for review; publication is expected on August 26.
