National COPD Awareness Month and Optimizing Air Quality Conditions in Puerto Rico

To focus attention on ways people get COPD, how to better manage the condition, and preventing new cases, November is recognized as National COPD Awareness Month.
Exposure to tobacco smoke has long been known to be a key factor in the development and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but there are other exposure risks. About one in four people with COPD have never smoked and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that exposure to airborne pollutants in the home and workplace can be a contributing factor. These pollutants could be in the form of bioaerosols, gases, dusts, or fumes.
COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, makes breathing difficult. Nearly 16 million U.S. adults have the disease. Millions more suffer from it, but have not yet been diagnosed or treated. Common symptoms of COPD include:
- Frequent coughing or wheezing
- Excess phlegm, mucus, or sputum production
- Shortness of breath
- Trouble taking a deep breath
