Alan F. Boyne’s Extensive Neuroscience Book Will Be Featured at the 2023 LibLearnX

The author encourages readers to understand rationality and how one can recognize it.

San Diego, California – WEBWIRE

“Fresh insight into the origins of the divided vertebrate brain readily explains the broad irrational streak in human history.”

ReadersMagnet is excited to exhibit Alan F. Boyne’s “Headwaters of the River of Bullshit (Looking Glass Neuroscience)” at the 2023 LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience on January 27-30, 2023, at the New Orleans Earnest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Headwaters of the River of Bullshit (Looking Glass Neuroscience)” describes the author’s personal journey toward discovering and understanding rationality. In this book, readers will understand the division of mental labor and how each side of the brain functions in one’s rationality and way of thinking.

The introduction explains the difference between the left and right hemispheres. One’s experience of self-consciousness and having an inner monologue can be traced to the left hemisphere of most right-handers. In contrast, the right hemisphere is silent. As the author explains: “Questioned all the livelong day, the right hemisphere will behave like the tar baby in the old plantation story – and say not a word.”

In the 19th century, this difference was interpreted as evidence that the right brain got left behind when the capacity for language evolved in the left; that the right brain is now a relic of animal life on the other side of an evolutionary railroad track. However, the author suggests otherwise: “Now is a good time to step back and start the story of the brain over again, using recent clues that surely invite a collective slap to the forehead: Why didn’t we pick up on this sooner?”

Author Bio

Growing up in the heavily bombed docklands of Liverpool, Alan F. Boyne saw education as an avenue to a “better job” than his merchant mariner father. He studied biochemistry at Liverpool University followed by immigration to the United States in 1965. Alan’s academic life included postdoctoral stints in Cambridge (England), Tulane University (New Orleans), and Iowa City. During Alan’s assistant professor years at Northwestern University in Chicago, he invented the “Gentleman Jim”, a quick-freezing machine for preparing tissue for electron microscopy. This eventually put him in a position to take an early retirement from a tenured professorship at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. He built a home on an island in the Pacific Northwest and then concentrated on developing a three-volume account of the source of our vulnerability to bogus rationalization. This interpretation of the anatomical duality of the brain suggests a path to genuine rationality for our species.
