DeMars at the New York Library Association 2022 Annual Conference and Trade Show on November 3–4, 2022, at the Saratoga Springs City Center at 522 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, and at the ReadersMagnet Book Confab on October 28–30, 2022, at 72 Warren St., Tribeca, New York.

“Penelope’s Song” examines the turbulent seventeenth century when the Dutch fought with other empires on the open seas for those riches, and colonization of the Atlantic coast of North America began in earnest.

This book explores the Netherlands’ Golden Age, a time when the United Provinces of the Netherlands were known for their support of liberty of conscience, or what is now called freedom of religion. You will be intrigued by the story of a vivacious niece of a wealthy Dutch merchant in Amsterdam who hastily marries her father’s brilliant student and sails to one of the least desirable outposts in all the Dutch empire, New Amsterdam, today’s Manhattan.

As you scan through the pages of this book, you will discover how the legendary New Jersey couple Richard and Penelope Stout got caught in the crosshairs of Dutch Director Willem Kieft’s violent attack against innocent local indigenous villages that incited massive retaliation. Also, why would Lady Deborah Moody flee her English country estate for Puritan Massachusetts and her son, Sir Henry Moody, become a cavalier of King Charles I?

The novel explains in detail the theological conflicts and struggles in Europe and England that plagued the lives of the once-prolific Algonquian people who lived in the eastern woodlands of North America.

Brilliant author Carol J. DeMars skillfully extracts the most significant essence of her characters’ (both fictional and real-life) lives to demonstrate that the fight for the dignity of political and religious freedom is a perpetual task.
