Who wouldn’t be amazed by Craig Carpenter Downer’s brand of emotionally stirring poetry and thought-provoking passages?

Life has been an endlessly amazing adventure – a never-ending beautiful journey for Craig Carpenter Downer, who, through his book “Wonder Streams of the Soul” (ReadersMagnet; 2022), desires to “share the best and highest in life.”

“Wonder Streams of the Soul” is an extensive collection of brilliant poems, insightful journal entries, and fascinating and thought-provoking essays, many of which are accompanied by exquisite illustrations, including the author’s own photos. All these sum up and bring together a vast variety of his observations, insights, and inspirations. Many of these derive from his impressive arts and sciences education, worldwide travels, friendships, interactions with the world of nature, and spiritual meditations.

Covering a wide range of subjects, the poems and essays in “Wonder Streams of the Soul” vividly describe Animals and their Ecosystems, with special emphasis on the wild horses and Andean tapirs Craig has studied, the workings of Nature including the Earth’s Climate, our various Relationships to one another, Humor and the ironic side of life, life’s Romantic side and the meaning of Love, life’s Moral and Ethical challenges, the complicated but crucial world of Politics, the fascinating nature of Language, as well as the mysteries of Life and Death, Love, Reincarnation, and the Supernatural, or higher Spiritual Dimension, and how all of the foregoing relates to the Divine truth, justice and perfection. There is something for everyone in this extraordinary book! And those who love to reflect upon refined ideas and feelings will be particularly pleased. This book will enable its readers to experience the beauty, magnitude, and mystery of life and tap into their inner philosopher.

Quite noteworthy to this reviewer are the poems and passages about nature and adventure – two themes that predominate and are mutually interwoven in the author’s life and outlook. One such poem is the beautifully photo-illustrated “A Walk in the Woods,” where the author recites: “. . . For here True Beauty dwelt/ By higher law was ordered/ Not just in human hearts and minds/ But in all the creatures large or small/ Of all Orders, Classes, Phylae, et cetera …” Another poem is “The Adventurer,” wherein he rhymes: “The adventurer/ Dares to go where/ No man hath/ Ever dared! …”

“Those who espouse a God-centered view of the mysteries and wonder of nature might appreciate some of the poems in this expansive collection,” expresses a review of the book by BlueInk Review that goes on to say: “The essays are equally abstract, largely concerned with spiritual and philosophical issues. Selections from the author’s notebook include descriptions of nature and thoughts of philosophy and faith.”

Author Bio

Craig’s amazing life has put him in touch with diverse places, cultures, and species. He has worked in South America, the United States, and Europe. A life-long truth-seeker, he has delved into all branches of biology, majoring in Ecology, and even studied Philosophy, History, Music, English, French, and Spanish. With an innate affinity for all diverse kinds, he grew up around wilderness along the Nevada-California border, which he explored on his horse, Poco, by hiking and camping trips, often with his dear family.

He has worked for animal and ecological NGOs, has studied and taught at universities, been a plaintiff for nature and animal protection and conservation causes, testified in Congress, and has accomplished a ground-breaking telemetric study of the endangered Andean, or Mountain, Tapir. He has also conducted several in-depth investigations of various wild horse herds and their habitats throughout the West. He defends the keystone tapirs, wild horses, and all members of the Perissodactyla order of mammals through his non-profit, the Andean Tapir Fund. He offers talks on these important but disappearing species, which, along with his publications, instigate more investigations, better protections and more nature reserves and sanctuaries.

As an IUCN Species Survival Commission member, he wrote its Andean Tapir Action Plan and species description. He is also a Nevada Poetry Society member, plays the piano, composes melodies that often come spontaneously (see his related essay in “Wonder Streams of the Soul”), and has guided nature films that have been viewed worldwide. He also greatly enjoys nature photography and has had several cover photos in journals and magazines such as Americas.
