Testing Homes and Buildings in California in Support of National Radon Action Month

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports that there is no known safe level of exposure to radon since lung cancer can result from low exposures to it. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released from rock, soil, and water that can build up to dangerous levels inside a home or other type of building.

Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into a home or building through cracks and other holes in the foundation. While radon from soil gas is the main cause of problems, in some situations, it can even enter a building through well water. It is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), a measurement of radioactivity. In the United States, the average indoor radon level is about 1.3 pCi/L. The average outdoor level is about 0.4 pCi/L. The U.S. Surgeon General and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends fixing homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L. EPA also recommends that people consider fixing their homes for radon levels between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L.

“CDPH states that testing is the only way to find out if you have a radon problem and this is true as one cannot see, smell, or taste radon,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The agency also shares the fact that radon has been found in every county in the state. To spread awareness and to encourage people to test their homes, schools and businesses, January has been designated as National Radon Action Month. These tests are affordable and if an issue is discovered, there are radon mitigation techniques that can put in place.”
