The Vienna Philharmonic will perform their famous New Year’s Day concert from the renowned Musikverein in Vienna on January 1, 2022.

The concert will be conducted by Daniel Barenboim, who has directed the Philharmonic frequently since 1989, and first appeared with them as a pianist in 1956. This will be his third appearance since 2009, which makes him the most frequent conductor of these concerts over the past 15 years. Maestro Barenboim is the former Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The 2022 New Year’s Day program includes many favorites by Johann Strauss Junior, including the Thousand and One Nights and the Overture to Die Fledermaus as well as six items appearing on the New Year’s Day concert for the first time. As it has for decades now, the encore features the most famous waltz ever, From the Blue Danube, and the Radetzky March.

NPR Music has provided the complete New Year’s Day concert to hundreds of American radio stations since 2003.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the vast majority of the orchestra world was silent, the Vienna Philharmonic resumed their concerts in June 2020 with 3 concerts in Vienna under Daniel Barenboim. By maintaining strict internal and external protocols, the Philharmonic has been able to perform frequently since then. They played many concerts at the Salzburg Festival (both in 2020 and 2021), toured Japan twice (in November 2020 and November 2021), and played in Italy and Denmark, as well as concerts in Vienna during 2021. The 2022 New Year’s Day concert will be the first with an audience since the pandemic began.

The NPR production crew includes host Lisa Mullins of NPR Member station WBUR (her 16th New Year’s Day broadcast), NPR engineer Alex Drewenskus (his first broadcast) and producer Brian Bell (his 22nd broadcast).
