Bloomberg Journalism Diversity Program Announces 2022 Dates, May 16-20, 2022 (U.S.) and June 6-10, 2022 (U.K.)

NEW YORK – WEBWIRE

The Bloomberg 2022 Journalism Diversity Program has launched recruiting for its 2022 programs, which are planned to be conducted in-person at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York City for students studying in the United States and at Bloomberg’s London office for the students studying in the United Kingdom.

All expenses for participating students will be covered. This past year’s program hosted its largest group of students in the program’s history, with 50 students in the 2021 cohort.  The 2021 program, in partnership with UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, included 30 participants in the United States. The U.K. program is in partnership with the Department of Journalism at City, University of London and included 20 students.

With instruction by senior Bloomberg journalists and executives, participants are led through The Bloomberg Way: the guide for Bloomberg journalists on reporting, editing and applied business and economic knowledge. Participants learn to demonstrate that the story of the economy, business and markets is best achieved when the focus is on the greatest diversity of participants.  Instructors also include faculty from partner universities: UNC, Berkeley and City.

“Journalism is about who is asking the questions,” said Matt Winkler, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Bloomberg News. “We also know that if everyone asking the questions looks alike and sounds alike, there is little chance of explaining the world as it really is. This is why we created the Bloomberg Journalism Diversity Program.”

The Bloomberg Journalism Diversity Program helps to increase awareness of the field of business journalism, and Bloomberg in particular, to college students of diverse backgrounds. By focusing on students earlier in their academic careers, this program aims to inspire and motivate students to take the necessary classes and secure internships that will prepare them for a career in the business reporting field.

The Hussman School has worked with Bloomberg News since 2017 to offer this program, and  the partnership expanded to include University of California, Berkeley in 2018 to offer the program for students in the U.S. and City, University of London in 2019 for the students in the U.K. The 2020 program was on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the program, students will:

  • Acquire a basic overview of markets and financial concepts.
  • Learn the fundamentals of business journalism, one of the most in-demand fields in media today.
  • Practice writing and reporting techniques via hands-on instruction with Bloomberg journalists.
  • Gain insights on working in a diverse environment and the importance of representation in journalism.
  • Join an accomplished group of fellow students and program alumni who will serve as career mentors.
