’El Tiny’ Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. – WEBWIRE

For the next 30 days, NPR Music will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a Tiny Desk takeover, including “El Tiny” performances by J Balvin, Camila Cabello, Prince Royce, Sech and more.

The special series will feature 10 Tiny Desk (home) concerts, curated by NPR Music’s Alt.Latino team, as well as several Instagram Live interviews with Latinx musicians and celebrities, and some exclusive “El Tiny” merchandise.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins today and runs through October 15.

“Even though we have some of the biggest names in Latin music scheduled, our ’El Tiny’ takeover of the Tiny Desk (home) concerts is more than just entertainment,” said Felix Contreras, host of NPR Music’s Alt.Latino. “I firmly believe that music has always been an accurate barometer of what’s going on in the Latin communities here in this country. Reggaetón hip-hop, soul, Afro Latino, jazz. It’s all reflected in our line up and shows how diverse our listening habits, and our community, is.”

The all-star Latinx lineup includes: J Balvin, Maye, Diamante Eléctrico, Sech, Prince Royce, Silvana Estrada, Yendry, Nicki Nicole, Eme Alfonso and Camila Cabello. Like all Tiny Desks during the COVID-19 pandemic, these “El Tiny” concerts were recorded remotely due to ongoing social distancing measures.

NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series reaches more than 16 Million monthly viewers, who collectively watch more than 50 Million concerts a month.

Alt.Latino was one of NPR’s first podcasts, created in 2010 to amplify Latinx artists that weren’t part of mainstream media. Over the past decade, Alt.Latino has examined current events, popular music, and artist narratives to offer an intersectional lens into Latinidad and reveal a nuanced world of artistry with deep cultural significance.
