Conversations with Exhibition Artists Live Streamed on September 17

WEBWIRE

Final Weeks

Off the Record
Through September 27, 2021

Off the Record brings together the work of thirteen contemporary artists from the Guggenheim’s collection who interrogate, revise, and query dominant narratives and the transmission of culture through “official” records. Across various manipulations of records, including state documents, newspapers, and photographs, artists in this exhibition seek to call out the power dynamics obscured by official documentation, complicate the ideas of objectivity and neutrality, and surface new narrative possibilities. Off the Record features works by Sadie Barnette, Sarah Charlesworth, Sara Cwynar, Leslie Hewitt, Tomashi Jackson, Glenn Ligon, Carlos Motta, Lisa Oppenheim, Adrian Piper, Lorna Simpson, Sable E. Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems. Off the Record is organized by Ashley James, Associate Curator, Contemporary Art.

Public Program

Off the Record: An Unclassified Dossier
September 17, 1 pm ET

A symposium marking the close of the exhibition Off the Record, this collated series of conversations features the voices of many of the artists represented in the show. Speakers will be grouped thematically to discuss topics ranging from the legacies of creative practices in the 1970s and 1990s and the potentials in mining public and private records, to the unearthing of historical accounts that run counter to dominant narratives. These discussions are conceptually bound by a closing lecture that addresses the material histories of paper documentation itself.

  • Legacies of the 1970s and 1990s: Sara Cwynar and Sable E. Smith
  • Public/Private Accounts: Leslie Hewitt, Lisa Oppenheim, and Hank Willis Thomas
  • Counter Histories: Sadie Barnette, Carlos Motta, and Tomashi Jackson
  • Keynote: Karlynne Ejercito, University of Southern California

This program is free and will be broadcast live on the Guggenheim’s YouTube channel. Register to receive updates and a tune-in reminder.

Additional features related to this exhibition, including video content, an audio guide, blog posts, and audio clips of the artists speaking about their work, are posted at guggenheim.org/offtherecord.
