Sally Netzel, Author, and Playwright Releases Her New Novel Laced With Family Drama, History, and Music

Sally Netzel has written over 30 plays, including three musicals and 10 plays for children, most of which have been produced in both professional and amateur venues around the country. Music, humor and stories are innate in her. In “Bohunk,” her latest novel, she dramatically traces fascinating characters with talent or love for music through generations.

In her New York premiere, Sara, a young American composer, leads her new symphony. Members of her family are in the audience, expressing different degrees of delight or envy at her present accomplishment. The setting and music elicit genuine and distorted memories, some amusing and others terrifying, which are conveyed movement by movement, intermission to intermission. But these are only digressions from the true story of the composer’s lost family, a family of one obstinate, harsh, hard-drinking Bohemian immigrant, a young man embarking on a new life in the nineteenth century equipped only with a shovel and a broken-down fiddle.

The novel tells the multi-generational tale of a family and their affinity for music. It is interspersed with drama, conflict, and afflictions. With lyrical depth and firsthand knowledge of classical and contemporary music, Sally Netzel weaves a scintillating novel that will thrill and inspire readers. Netzel masterfully intertwines two timelines while treading a labyrinth filled with family drama, history, and music.

Netzel is a recipient of the John Gassner Award for Playwriting. She was a professional company member of the Dallas Theater Center in Texas for 15 years as a resident playwright, director, actor, and producer of a series of plays for children. She holds a master of arts degree in theater from Trinity University in San Antonio, where she also served as an associate professor of acting. She now lives and writes in Denver, Colorado.
