Petrobras approved the allocation of over R $ 76 million for a series of voluntary actions to support society in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, in continuity with the efforts that have been carried out by the company since last year. The total value of Petrobras’ shares since the beginning of the pandemic has already reached R $ 100 million.

The new initiative provides for the distribution of basic food baskets to families in extreme poverty, which are the most affected by the pandemic, and the acquisition of oxygen production plants for installation in hospitals that serve patients with Covid-19, among other actions that are under study. Part of the amount approved for carrying out these actions comes from funds recovered by Petrobras in a recently signed leniency agreement.

“Petrobras remains committed to helping Brazilian society against the devastating effects of the pandemic. At this time, we believe it is essential to increase the supply of oxygen to save lives and contribute to feeding vulnerable families. We cannot remain inert in the face of the suffering imposed by Covid. We are developing other initiatives, using resources that were taken from us in the past for the benefit of society, ”says Roberto Castello Branco, president of Petrobras.

Donations of basic food baskets will take place over three months and are expected to benefit 60,000 families in conditions of social vulnerability, participants in social and environmental projects supported by Petrobras and residents of areas neighboring Petrobras’ business units. Families will be contacted individually in order to avoid agglomerations. In total, 180 thousand basic food baskets will be donated between the months of April and June. This measure aims to guarantee basic food so that these families are able to go through the most acute crisis period.

Petrobras will also invest in the acquisition of 12 oxygen mini-plants to supply public hospitals, with the capacity to supply about 20 ICU beds each. The states where the plants will be installed will be defined according to criteria such as having Petrobras operations units and criticality of the contamination and mortality rates of COVID-19. The company will also donate oxygen cylinders according to the same criteria.

In 2020, Petrobras and its controlled companies had already allocated R $ 23 million to carry out actions to support society in the fight against the pandemic. More than 600,000 Covid-19 detection tests and thousands of hygiene items such as protective masks and alcohol gel were donated to the Unified Health System (SUS).

Last year, more than one million liters of fuel were destined by the company to states in all regions of the country. Shipments of gasoline and diesel fueled service vehicles on the front line to combat the pandemic, such as ambulances. In partnership with Liquigás, more than 11 thousand units of 13 kg kitchen gas cylinders were donated to families in situations of social vulnerability.

Petrobras also created a scientific front with the objective of researching solutions to fight the pandemic. Among the solutions developed, prototypes of low-cost pulmonary ventilators for patients with Covid-19 stand out, in addition to a task force for the maintenance and repair of this equipment.

In February 2021, Petrobras also joined the “Juntos pelo Amazonas” initiative, together with other companies, for the donation of an oxygen plant in Manaus.
