About-face! The Other Side of the Coin During World War One

An account of the events which impacted Americans on both the homefront and front lines amidst the Great War and Spanish Flu.

West Hartford, CT and Miami, FL – WEBWIRE

Patriotic and United. These are two adjectives that can perfectly describe the early twentieth century, USA. During the Allies’ war against Imperial Germany, the American people showed great support for the Federal Government under President Woodrow Wilson’s leadership, the nation’s war efforts and America’s allies.

We’ve surely heard tales of valor from soldiers who put their lives on the line to defend their beloved country. However, equally valorous and supportive of the war, were the contributions and efforts of those Americans who spent the war in their own homes. Using the wartime experiences of Springfield, Vermont, this is the other side of the coin which Simon Perlsweig had shed light on it in his book, “Front Porches to Front Lines: One Small Town’s Mobilization of Men, Women, Manufacturing, and Money During World War One.”

The book is a memoir compiled from the letters of Lawrence and Gladys Reed. It brings to light the efforts of the people in the small town of Springfield, VT who do their part as citizens of the United States of America, to protect the threatened freedoms, they held dear. From manufacturing bullets to buying Liberty Loans, Perlsweig’s book exposes the sacrifices of the citizens who were left at home, especially the unparalleled efforts of the Springfield residents.

Written from the perspective of an ordinary couple, a machinist and a teacher, the book will make you appreciate freedom more, knowing of a previous generation’s sacrifices of life and comfort. There hasn’t been a time in the great history of the USA when the people have been as united as then. He also shares some accounts as to how the people of Springfield fought another war in the form of a virus later on called the Spanish Flu. A real account of resilience.

The book intelligently utilizes academic writing, while remaining accessible to a diverse audience. The detailed way the book is written will give you a first-hand experience of what had happened during those times. Truly deserving of the three award recognitions it has received. These include first place awards from the Beverly Hills Book Award and Literary Titan, as well as a runner-up finish from the National Indie Excellence Award. The book also got a 5-star review from Literary Titan.
