Reviewing the Sudanese Heritage: Natural Sites 1

On 23 December 2020, the UNESCO Khartoum office, Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom) and General Administration for Wildlife Conservation in Sudan organized an Expert Meeting for reviewing the list of Sudanese Heritage, which is a national basement for the World Heritage, and has to be maintained in accordance with the UNESCO 1972 Convention. The meeting targeted the natural part of the list. It took place on the premises of General Administration for Wildlife Conservation, and attended by 24 experts including 8 women. Mr. Abdullah Khalil, the General Director of the General Administration for Wildlife Conservation in Sudan, and Ms. Wafaa Sidahmed, the Secretary General of the Sudanese NatCom, led the event.

In the opening session, Mr. Abdullah Khalil welcomed the experts, spoke about the importance of natural heritage sites, their protection and transfer to future generations. He appreciated the efforts made by all partners working for safeguarding the Sudanese heritage. Ms. Wafaa Sidahmed thanked the  General Administration for Wildlife Conservation for preserving natural sites in general, and hosting the activity in particular. She explained the necessity of periodical reviewing the Sudanese Heritage List and the criteria for selecting places.

Then, Ms. Salwa Mansour, the Sudanese Committee of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme, overviewed existing Sudanese natural sites of an outstanding value, and after a fruitful discussion the participants agreed on following preliminary selection:

  • Dinder National Park, Sennar state;
  • Jebel Al-Dair National Park, North Kordofan;
  • Jebel Al-Hassania National Park, River Nile state;
  • Jebel Marra National Park, Darfur;
  • Wadi Howar National Park, Darfur;
  • Radom National Park, Darfur;
  • Al Mogran (Blue and White Niles Conjunction), Khartoum state;
  • Owainat (the place in Sahara shared by Sudan, Egypt and Lybia
