Online – WEBWIRE

Remember the Women Institute will present Artists and Writers Respond to Domestic Violence as a Zoom Webinar at 2 PM ET on December 1, 2020, with an outstanding lineup of participants. The webinar is being offered in cooperation with the Consulate General of Israel in New York and the New York City Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-based Violence, in connection with UN Women’s Orange the World  and 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

Artists and writers address domestic violence through visual art, poetry, song, dance, poetry, theater, and non-fiction. There are also testimonies by two mothers of domestic violence victims, as well as presentations by government officials. Keren Goldstein’s She’s Gone art installation of victims’ clothing is featured, as a prequel to a symposium and live exhibition to take place next year. All Databases Are Incomplete, the premiere of a play by Cynthia L. Cooper is performed by Lisa Pelikan.

Former USA poet laureate Natasha Trethewey reads her “Imperatives for Carrying On in the Aftermath,” and Evan Boland scholar Dr. Jody Allen Randolph reads Boland’s “Domestic Violence” poem. Award-winning author Rachel Louise Snyder reads from her book, No Visible Bruises.
Dr. Christie Brungardt, mother of victim Jana Lynne Mackey, and Theresa Mapes, mother of victim Simeonette (Sissy) Mapes, talk about their beloved daughters, as well as their organizations that combat domestic violence.

Folksinger Suzanne Vega sets the mood with her famous song “Luka,” about a boy’s experience in an abusive home. Choreographer Jill Sigman of jill sigman/thinkdance offers somatic tools for survival, and the Melodia Women’s Choir sings “Deep Peace.”

Adva Vilchinski, Consul for Public Diplomacy, The Consulate General of Israel in New York, and Hannah Pennington, Assistant Commissioner for Policy and Training at the New York City Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-based Violence, discuss the work of their offices on the issue.

Rochelle Saidel,  Executive Director of Remember the Women Institute, a nonprofit in New York, will moderate the session.
