The Most Uncommon of Friends

WEBWIRE

A peculiar bond between an Aristocrat and a servant girl.

English Society in the 1800s was separated into classes based on one’s financial and social status. These classes led to discrimination and to the mentality that one must always choose friends from among those who were of the same station in life as oneself.

A friendship between a noble and a servant was almost unheard of. The social barriers between the classes were formidable. This story is about two women who defy the conventions of their times, remaining loyal friends through good times and bad.

In the Revised edition of “Betsy and Catherine: An Uncommon Friendship” we follow the tale of two friends from different ‘worlds’ who are polar opposites when it comes to their social status. The story commences in old London where both women are judged and exiled as convicts to Australia. We follow the friendship between Catherine, an aristocrat, and her ladies maid, Betsy. We see how their friendship flourishes. However, when Catherine is forced to live a lower class lifestyle, she becomes distraught and is viewed as a “madwoman.”

Helen was born and lived in Ballarat, Australia for fifty-two years. She has two adult sons and one grandson who live in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She loves them dearly. She lives in Tucson, Arizona, USA with her husband who has encouraged her to pursue her dreams and write.

Helen never had any great desire to write a book. Actually, she thought it was beyond her. But her love for bringing words together to tell a story won over. She has always enjoyed both English and Australian history. Writing Betsy and Catherine has been partly a result of that love. Creating a fictional connection between her English and Australian Ancestors was a joy for Helen.

Helen completed a Professional Writing and Editing course back in Australia. As part of her course-work, she was challenged to write a short story. The outline for Betsy and Catherine was the result of that challenge, though it was only a few thousand words. Little did she know at that time, Betsy and Catherine would develop into a novel.
