Water Damage and Mold Concerns in California Community Following a Cluster of Pinhole Leaks in Copper Pipes

LA Testing offers analytical services, sampling supplies, test kits and inspection tools to identify water damage, mold growth, water chemistry, and the composition of plumbing pipes and materials.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

California community recently experienced a rash of leaking water pipes in residents’ homes. The sudden increase in copper pipes developing pinhole leaks occurred in Folsom, California and has been reported on by multiple media outlets.

The City of Folsom Environmental and Water Resources Department also recently published information about the situation. The department shared that it was sampling water and inspecting sample copper pipes. City engineers were also examining potential causes, including quality and age of the pipe materials, installation methodology and workmanship, unexpected foreign debris in the copper pipe, mixed metals in the plumbing, and water composition. They also stated that city engineers were not aware of any causal connection between the drinking water and the pinholes found in the copper pipes.

“Copper pipes can corrode over time due to a number of issues, including water chemistry or microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC),” said Joseph Frasca, LA Testing’s Senior Vice President of Marketing. “The coppers pipe could also have defects or were simply made too thin to handle the water pressure. As the city investigates the cause, a number of homeowners have had to deal with water damage that has destroyed property and created mold concerns. Any water damage that is not quickly addressed can support the growth of mold in as short as 48 hours on many wet building materials, furnishing and personal belongings. Even mold growing in a wall cavity, attic, crawl space or behind cabinets could impact the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of the home.”

The laboratory testing experts at LA Testing are available to assist engineers, water utilities and homeowners. With multiple California facilities, LA Testing offers material testing of copper pipes and other plumbing materials, water chemistry analysis, and microbial testing services for MIC and mold investigations. They carry all of the sampling supplies needed, easy-to-use test kits and a wide range of building inspection tools, such as infrared cameras and moisture meters, to help identify water damage.
