Regularly Cleaning Your Wristwatch Can Help Minimize the Chances of Bacterial Growth

EMSL Analytical offers environmental testing services for Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (staph) and other microbial pathogens.

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Have you cleaned your wristwatch recently? The Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic University tested 20 watches that were made from different materials and discovered the presence of bacteria. Results showed that four watches tested positive for  Escherichia coli  ( E. coli ) while six had traces of the bacterium. Nine watches tested positive for  Staphylococcus aureus  (staph) and seven watches had high total counts of bacteria overall.

So which type of wristband had the most bacteria? The study found that rubber or plastic bands tested the highest for bacteria whereas the gold wristband had zero findings. Certain metals, like gold, are known to have antimicrobial attributes. The cases could be related to a lack of cleaning the wristbands, especially since we come into contact with a variety of contaminants throughout the day whether it’s from something dirty or unwiped sweat from exercising.

“Regularly washing your wristband with soap and water can help minimize chances of bacteria found on your watch,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers comprehensive environmental testing services to identify  E. coli , staph and other microbial contaminants. Laboratory testing is the best way to determine the presence of harmful bacteria.”
