Over 25,000 Pounds of Sausage Products Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

EMSL Analytical provides testing to identify a wide range of microbial contaminants in both animal and human foods and beverages, supplements, cosmetics, consumer products and pharmaceuticals.

Indianapolis, IN – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recently announced that a sausage company in Ohio was recalling approximately 25,115 pounds of sausage products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes 15 ready-to-eat sausage products that were produced on several days in late October and one day in November of 2019. The products, many of which were made as pizza toppings, were shipped to distribution centers in Indiana and Ohio.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in distribution centers, restaurants, or institutional refrigerators or freezers. Restaurants and institutions that have purchased these products are urged not to serve them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria monocytogenes infections cause about 260 deaths each year in the United States. Fortunately at the time of the recall notice, there had been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these contaminated products. Earlier this year, the agency was involved in an investigation of a multistate outbreak of Listeria infections linked to deli-sliced meats and cheeses in which 10 people were hospitalized and one case was fatal.

The scientists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. are dedicated to helping food manufacturers, distributors, importers and regulatory agencies quickly identify microbial contaminants before products can reach consumers. With a state-of-the-art facility, EMSL offers rapid microbial testing services to identify Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli and a wide range of other pathogens and contaminants. This testing is instrumental for confirming that raw ingredients, production surfaces and final products meet all quality control criteria and food safety regulations.
