Jacquie Faber’s Metaphorical Take on Existential Anguish

WEBWIRE

The world is filled with rules of what to do and what not to do. Sometimes, it dictates what you ought to be and how you ought to behave. Jacquie Faber, however, tells otherwise in her imagery-packed book, “Desiree’s Night Flight.”

Desiree is a butterfly who so badly wants to fly at night. It is her ultimate dream to dance in the dark. However, it is not easy to achieve this dream as she has been told by her parents that the practice is not one for their kind. Flying at night is only for bats, owls, and moths. Because of this, Desiree is torn into anguish, debating in her mind whether she should take the risk of facing the unfamiliar to pursue her dreams, or whether she should stick with what her parents told her is it is the norm.

This book offers to explore one great crisis in a man’s existence in magical metaphors, the crisis being the two major competing forces in a man’s life – himself and society. This is told in a way that people of all ages can relate and enjoy at the same time. As simple and childlike as it is told, the process of getting meaning beyond the text will baffle yet enlighten readers on a personal and spiritual level.

The story is perfect for those who are trapped in the norm set by society, those who wish to teach the lesson of persistence to the young, and those who want to validate their choices.

About the Author

Jacquie Faber was an elementary school teacher thirty-one years in the Ross Valley School District in San Anselmo, Calif. She graduated and earned her teaching certificate from San Francisco State in 1965 with a Lifetime Credential in Elementary Education. In her teaching career, she specialized in Project-Based Learning (P.B.L), a way of teaching that empowers students by giving them a chance to decide what specific areas of the curriculum they would like to study. This teaching method allows students to pick a chosen subject they are interested in, like butterflies, for instance, then write about it and design a project to go along with their writing. She was awarded the Golden Bell Award for this in 1999.

Jacquie, in her class, taught her students lessons about mistakes and growing from it, and “following their bliss.” Her “Desiree’s Night Flight” illustrates how much she values these principles, especially the latter one.
