ABB wins framework contract worth over $100 million to strengthen Italy’s power grid

ABB Power Grids contracted by Terna to provide gas-insulated switchgear as a result of a European tender

Zurich, Switzerland – WEBWIRE

ABB has signed a four-year framework contract worth more than $100 million with Italy’s transmission system operator (TSO), Terna. The TSO is responsible for securing and dispatching electricity throughout the country.

Terna will utilize advanced technology from ABB to strengthen Italy’s grid. The contract includes the supply of ABB’s gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), a solution that enables a significant reduction of equipment footprint to just one tenth of the space occupied by air-insulated switchgear substations.

ABB’s GIS solutions enable substations to be built within cities, located within buildings, underground and on rooftops, to supply safe and reliable power. GIS is a compact and reliable solution that enables safe operations in confined spaces.

“We are supporting Terna to achieve its mission to make the Italian electricity system more resilient,” said Markus Heimbach, managing director of ABB’s high voltage business line, within the company’s Power Grids business. ‘Our talented experts are developing pioneering technologies that contribute toward a sustainable energy future through a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

ABB pioneered GIS technology over 50 years ago and continues to drive innovations in this space. As a market and technology leader in high-voltage GIS technology, ABB offers ratings and applications from 72.5kV to 1,200kV and has a global installed base of more than 35,000 bays. ABB’s latest offering includes eco-efficient and digital capabilities.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries.
