Eni releases “Eni For Human rights”, its first comprehensive publication on its commitment to human rights

Eni is releasing today “Eni For Human Rights,” the company’s first comprehensive report that provides transparent and factual information on its commitment to the respect for human rights.  

The document, which is being released on International Human Rights Day, is a comprehensive report on the company’s activities in the area of human rights, which builds on the work carried out over the last years with the cooperation and fruitful engagement of Human Rights experts and organizations.

“This document shows how the respect for human rights is integrated in each of our activities, involving the company’s over 30,000 people and the way we engage with our partners and suppliers, as well as with the local communities that host us,” said Claudio Descalzi, Eni’s Chief Executive Officer. ”The integration of the respect for human rights is a constantly evolving process: that’s why we are committed to continuous improvement, and we believe that transparency and accountability support our efforts to safeguard and spread a human rights culture,” Mr. Descalzi explained.

Respecting human rights is a prerequisite for a just energy transition and is rooted in Eni’s business model. Safeguarding everyone’s dignity is key to be able to operate in the long-term and support the host countries’ development. Eni’s approach to human rights is a core element of the new corporate mission – which is inspired by the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In December 2018, Eni’s Board approved a Statement on Respect for Human Rights that – following the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) – reflects the company’s most relevant (salient) human rights issues. The company’s top management is actively engaged in its promotion.

In addition, Eni has developed a wide range of processes and tools to assess its salient human rights issues, risks and impacts; and it is committed to designing, implementing and reporting on its human rights Due diligence process. To turn this vision into actions, it has put in place initiatives and programs of awareness-raising and training, supported by the top management. As an example, the training program provided during the last three years has seen more than 31,000 attendances and assessed 100% of new suppliers in accordance with social responsibility aspects. 

In November 2019, Eni was ranked in the top 4% among the 200 companies analyzed by the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB), and was named best performer in the “Company Human Rights Practices” section. In September 2019, Eni was confirmed as a Global Compact LEAD participant – a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders that take shared responsibility to shape a sustainable future – in a sign of its ongoing commitment to UNGPs.
