Respiratory Protection Makes OSHA Top 10 List of Citations Yet Again

EMSL Analytical provides respirators, filters, accessories and fit testing supplies, along with other personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect workers from airborne hazards and to help keep companies in regulatory compliance.

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

In September, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its preliminary list of the 10 most frequently cited safety and health violations for the 2019 fiscal year. Respiratory protection made the top 10 list again with a 5th place ranking, down one position from last year.

OSHA reports that millions of workers are required to wear respirators in workplaces throughout the United States. Respirators protect them against insufficient oxygen environments, harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases, vapors and sprays. Some of these occupational hazards may cause cancer, lung impairment, asthma and other diseases, or death in extreme circumstances.

Compliance with the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard applies to all occupational airborne exposures to contaminated air where the employee is exposed to a hazardous level of an airborne contaminant; required by the employer to wear respirators; or permitted to wear respirators.

Approved respirators can protect workers in two ways according to the agency. First, by the removal of contaminants from the air. This type includes particulate respirators which filter out airborne particles and air-purifying respirators with cartridges or canisters that filter out chemicals and gases. The second category of respirators supplies clean respirable air from another source. These include airline respirators which use compressed air from a remote source and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

“Respiratory protection plays a critical role in worker health and safety in so many industries,” said Jody Thomason, Vice President of Products/Corporate Purchasing for EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is addressed in standards specifically for the general, shipyard employment, marine terminals, longshoring and construction industries. Adhering to the Respiratory Protection Standard not only safeguards workers, it is also essential for avoiding costly noncompliance penalties.”

To highlight the importance of respiratory protection and other common health and safety issues faced by workers, EMSL recently sponsored an educational video detailing OSHA’s top 10 citations for 2019. The video can be seen at: https://youtu.be/s_kJ9jzKGRo.
