Author Pattie Palmer-Baker Debuts With A Dystopian Novel Like No Other

Imagine a place where almost everyone is beautiful. No unemployment. A world filled with pleasure – drugs (non-addictive), gorgeous clothes, sex, and sumptuous places to party. No poverty and little or no crime. Yes, this place exists! This is the world of Pattie Palmer-Baker’s first dystopian novel, “MALL.”

Unlike life right now in the 21st century, where poverty and other dreadful conditions exist, Mallites live luxuriously. Everything is provided. All they do with their time is to plunge themselves in pleasurable activities. On its surface, it’s a wonderland for everyone.

But what’s the catch? And what happens when Sara, a woman from reality, accidentally finds her way into this alien yet familiar world? Nona, a MALL Mental Health Practitioner, who is assigned to treat Sara upon her arrival, goes against the MALL code and helps her pass as a Mallite. Why? Because Sara is an antidote to Nona’s secret boredom.

Although at first Sara desperately wants to get home, as time goes on, she finds herself attracted to the lifestyle. As she searches for answers about her new reality, she draws herself and Nona into the darker places of MALL, among those is the orgiastic and dangerous dance club. Also, she gets involved with Paul, the leader of the shadowy rebel group, the Junkers. This group has been creating increasingly dangerous ’disturbances.’ Not only are they fighting against MALL Management and the inflexible Code, but many of them also seek a way ’Outside,’ if one exists.

If they do find the way ’Outside,’ who will leave? Paul, who is wanted by the authorities? Sara, who’s been getting used to the tempting lifestyle? Or Nona, whose relationship with Sara has underlined the emptiness of a life in MALL?

This is another piece that’s masterfully and wittingly written by Pattie. It’s a recipient of the 2017 Del Sol Prize for First Novel. Even the contest judge who is a bestselling mystery author, Hallie Ephron, said this: “It was the most original idea and kudos to the author for managing those dueling viewpoints. About the Author
Pattie Palmer-Baker loves words. Her award-winning artwork, which has graced the walls of many Pacific Northwest galleries, always includes her poetry in calligraphic form. In 2017 her novel Mall won the Del Sol Press Most Promising First novel award.

As an accomplished poet, she has been nominated for the Pushcart Poetry Prize. In 2017 she was awarded first prize in the 2017 Write to Publish contest, First and Second prize and The Bivona winner (prize for the best overall entry among the various categories in the 2019 Ageless Poets Contest. Her work has appeared in many journals including Calyx, Voicecatcher, Military Experience in the Arts, Minerva Rising and Phantom Drift. She has also served as the poetry co-editor for VoiceCatcher: a journal of women’s voices and visions.
