Spices Distributed to Stores in Northern California Recalled Due to Salmonella Concerns

To help prevent foodborne illnesses and costly product recalls, LA Testing offers analytical services to identify a wide range of microbial pathogens and contaminants.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about a recall of curry spices from one company. The spice products were manufactured in the United Arab Emirates before being imported and distributed to retail stores in Northern California.

According to the FDA announcement, the recall was initiated after sampling revealed the spices tested positive for Salmonella. The agency reports that Salmonella, the name of a group of bacteria, is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the United States. Usually, symptoms last 4-7 days and most people get better without treatment. However, Salmonella can cause more serious illness in older adults, infants and people with chronic diseases. Preventing foods contaminated with Salmonella from reaching consumers is essential as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the U.S. alone, infections from the bacteria cause 450 deaths, 23,000 hospitalizations and 1.2 million illnesses annually.

“To help food manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers, LA Testing offers proactive microbial testing of raw materials, finished food items and production surfaces,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “If contaminated products have already reached consumers, rapid PCR testing and traditional analytical methods can help to pinpoint the source of an outbreak. LA Testing’s network of laboratories provide both of these methods for a wide range of microbial contaminants to protect the industry and consumers.”
