Christie’s Education is delighted to announce that Asa Jarju will receive the inaugural Christie’s Education Reginald Browne Joint Scholarship in the US. Asa will study in the M.A. Art, Law and Business program in New York. Covering full tuition fees and a living expenses bursary for the academic year 2019/2020, this is the first year such a scholarship has been awarded, thanks to the generosity of financier Reginald Browne.

Asa graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Cartooning. Inspired by Japanese manga and anime, as well as western themed comics, Asa seeks to merge the two styles for a unique style of storytelling, animation, and sequential art. Since his graduation, Asa has worked as a freelance illustrator, selling work at comic book conventions, and participating in discussions in regards to the placement and conceptualization of African American characters in comic books.

Asa Jarju commented: “I am deeply grateful and thankful for the opportunity to venture further into the art world through Christie’s Education. I hope to be able to show the importance of comic art as it relates to the art market and community as a whole.”

Reginald Browne mentioned: “I am pleased to partner with Christie’s Education to provide opportunities for diverse candidates to gain entry into the art business. The motivation behind this initiative is to expand scholarship in the study of the visual arts, which will in turn broaden the expertise within the industry.”

Jane Hay, International Managing Director of Christie’s Education, said: “This is a part of our commitment to expanding opportunities for students from all backgrounds, making learning and employment opportunities in the art world accessible to a more diverse range of candidates.”

Christie’s Education has now opened the applications for the academic year 2020-21 with the Christie’s Education Reginald Browne Joint Scholarship opportunity for a student applying to the M.A. Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market program in New York.

Michael Findlay, Director of Acquavella Galleries and Member of the Board of Trustees of Christie’s Education New York, remarked: “Arts institutions, including museums, galleries and auction houses, cannot address the urgent need to increase the diversity of their staffs without trained candidates. The Christie’s Education Reginald Browne Joint Scholarship is a major step in the direction of encouraging talented students who otherwise might never consider the field.”
