Lead can still be found in places both inside and outside of homes and buildings in Puerto Rico and across the nation.

Next week, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is recognized across the United States. The event takes place from October 20th through the 26th in what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes as a weeklong campaign to bring together individuals, organizations, industry, and state and local governments to help increase lead awareness to reduce childhood exposure to the toxic heavy metal.

This effort continues to be a critical area of focus as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead. The agency also states that there are approximately half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 with blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the reference level at which it recommends public health actions be initiated.

Lead can still be found in places both inside and outside of homes and buildings in Puerto Rico and across the nation. Common sources include water that travels through lead pipes or brass fixtures and leaches lead into people’s drinking water or due to soil contamination issues. However, the main source of lead comes from the past use of lead-based paints, which were used in homes before 1978. Accidently swallowing or breathing in the lead dust created by this old, cracked and chipped paint is the leading cause of lead poisoning for most children.

“According to the CDC and World Health Organization, lead poisoning is entirely preventable,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In fact, the CDC states that childhood lead poisoning is considered the most preventable environmental disease among young children. To protect children, families and workers from lead and other heavy metal exposure risks, Zimmetry’s environmental and building science professionals offer comprehensive lead testing and consulting services. Testing can identify hazards so mitigation efforts can be implemented to address existing and future exposure risks. These services are available to assess indoor and outdoor environments across Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean.”
