Amar Gupta of MIT’s Institute of Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) Accepts Editor-in-Chief Role at Telehealth and Medicine Today

The online, peer-review journal Telehealth and Medicine Today (TMT) is honored to welcome Amar Gupta, PhD, as Editor-in-Chief.

“I am honored to receive and accept the invitation to be Editor-in-Chief of this important journal. It will direct and spur the growth and application of telemedicine and telehealth techniques in countries around the world. Based on my experience with new technologies and business processes related to automated processing of checks and Internet Telephony, global deployment of new techniques can take more time and effort than the original innovation itself. As an Editor-in-Chief, I will work with colleagues in academia, industry, government, non-profit organizations, and others to provide them a channel to disseminate their vision and accomplishments in order to attain greater visibility and scalability leading to the goal of “Healthcare for All: Better, Quicker, and Less Expensive, ” stated Amar Gupta, PhD, journal Editor-in-Chief.

Amar Gupta has been an Endowed Professor at two universities. He is currently with the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science, as well as the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, at MIT. A disruptive force and humanitarian, Dr Gupta developed MIT’s “Telemedicine and Telehealth for Enhancing Global Health” course that received rave reviews from participants. He pioneered content-based image search techniques on microcomputers & was lead inventor of the patented character-recognition technology used for electronic check-processing. He developed neural-network algorithms for reading mammograms - dramatically reducing the incidence of false negatives and false positives. He developed a neural network-based system for slashing by half a national pharmacy chain’s $1 billion drug-inventory while maintaining the same probability for availability of drug in stock.

Dr. Gupta will serve, alongside Dr. John D. Halamka, as co - Editor in Chief of Telehealth and Medicine Today. Dr. Halamka is the first International Healthcare Innovation Professor at Harvard Medical School, Executive Director of the Health Technology Exploration Center, at Beth Israel Lahey Medical, former CIO of Beth Israel Lahey Health, and a practicing emergency physician. Dr. Halamka, an international innovation and digital health pioneer himself, has served the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration, and strives to improve healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency for patients, providers, and payers throughout the world, using information technology.
