New ATSDR Toxicological Profile for Tetrachloroethylene (PERC) and Testing Resources for West Coast Environmental Professionals

LA Testing provides occupational, vapor intrusion and other environmental laboratory services to identify PERC and other industrial chemicals.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In June of this year, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) published a final Toxicological Profile for Tetrachloroethylene. The Toxicological Profile is a unique compilation of toxicological information on the hazardous substance. It reflects a comprehensive and extensive evaluation, summary and interpretation of available toxicologic and epidemiologic information and is revised and republished as necessary.

Tetrachloroethylene, also commonly referred to as PERC, is a manufactured liquid chemical that has been used widely for dry cleaning, as a chemical intermediate, metal degreaser and as a component of some consumer products.  Exposure to PERC can occur in some home and work environments due to the use of the chemical or from air, water, groundwater and soils that have become contaminated. People can even be exposed to PERC through a process known as vapor intrusion. This occurs when a home or building is constructed over contaminated soil or groundwater and the chemical migrates into the structure through cracks and openings in the structure’s foundation.

“As reported in the new ATSDR profile, PERC exposure may harm the nervous system, liver, kidneys and reproductive system, and may be harmful to unborn children,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “It also states that if one is exposed to PERC, they may also be at a higher risk of getting certain types of cancer. Back in 1988, California designated PERC under Prop 65 as known to cause cancer.”

The leading provider of industrial hygiene and environmental testing for PERC on the West Coast is LA Testing. Their laboratories provide analytical services and all of the testing supplies needed. They even sponsored an educational video several years ago about PERC and exposure concerns that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/f2Mac3bRfE8.
