Eleven Brands of Hummus Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination Concerns

MPL Laboratories provides testing services to identify and prevent microbial pathogens from contaminating foods, supplements, cosmetics, consumer products and pharmaceuticals.

Sparta, NJ – WEBWIRE

Eleven brands of hummus offered in dozens of varieties were recently voluntarily recalled by a Texas company after microbial contamination concerns were found. According to the company announcement, published by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), concerns over Listeria monocytogenes were identified at the manufacturing facility during an FDA inspection, although not found in the actual finished products.

In response, the company is urging consumers from across the United States and United Arab Emirates, where the hummus was distributed, to return those products listed as part of the recall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that an estimated 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year in the United States and about 260 of these infections are fatal. Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.

The CDC states that while listeriosis is usually a mild illness for pregnant women, it can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Also, some people with Listeria infections can develop severe infections of the bloodstream (causing sepsis) or brain (causing meningitis or encephalitis). In addition, this type of infection can sometimes affect other parts of the body, including bones, joints, and sites in the chest and abdomen.

The scientists at MPL Laboratories work diligently with manufacturers to prevent contaminated foods, beverages, cosmetics, consumer products and pharmaceuticals from reaching the public. MPL Laboratories’ high quality microbial testing services are instrumental for identifying microbial issues before products leave production facilities. Stopping contaminated products from reaching consumers is crucial for preventing illnesses, expensive recalls, damaging public relations and costly lawsuits.
