Sedex opens India office

WEBWIRE

Sedex is pleased to announce we have opened an office in Gurugram, India and now have a helpdesk team in place who can support members in English, Hindi, Bengali and Marathi. Our India team can support Sedex members in the Indian sub-continent with supplier onboarding and engagement, using Sedex tools, setting up user accounts and operating the Sedex platform.

Sedex has seen strong growth in the focus on corporate social responsibility and responsible business practices in India, in the past three years. India is the second highest country for uploading SMETA audits after China, with 2,904 audits from India being uploaded to the Sedex platform in 2018. The clothing and footwear sector make up more than 60% of Sedex supplier members in India.

The Government of India has recently sought to strengthen corporate social responsibility in India. Under Indian law, businesses with an annual turnover of more than 10bn rupees (£115m) must invest 2% of their profit into CSR activities and charity, under The Companies Act, 2013. Areas they can invest this money include education, poverty, gender equality and hunger, helping the country to support social development.

India was the first country in the world to enshrine corporate giving into the law in April 2014. In July 2019, the Act was amended under The Companies Bill 2019 to tighten CSR compliance and strengthen action for non-compliance of the company law regulation. Companies required to budget for CSR must now disclose in their annual reports, reasons why they were unable to fully spend 2% of these funds if they have not done so.

Having an office in India will enable Sedex to better support our members and provide members with faster responses on the Indian sub-continent.
