Artist Skillfully Combines Poetry and Painting in Vivid, Short Verses

Poetry is challenging for some to enjoy – they’re either mushy, long-winded, or stale. But poetry - with the right visual accompaniment, in the right graphic mix, and the right textured strokes, is beautiful to savor and absolutely quenches the soul of even the most unimpressed when words are blended together to harmoniously express and evoke.

Such is the work of   Roxsane K. Tiernan, “Art and Soul: to Arouse, to Excite, to Inspire”. Her short book is full of life in vivid colors and palpable sentences. As an artist, she masterfully constructs her poetry with natural elements around that seem ordinary as a stand-alone, until they are wisely merged.
On a painting titled Silent Sentinels, of long-ago dried up trees by the river, in hues of green and brown and blue, she writes about feelings, where a solitary existence works to keep them all inside, just like the dead trees standing next to each other in the wilderness.

Other poems and visuals reflect her adventuring from all over the world. She shares about learning chigiri-e in 1984, a Japanese torn washi paper collage that got her artistic creativity going. According to her, this technique brings out nature’s beauty.

Her work has been lauded and landed with a few awards, solo shows, magazine publications, and invited as a jury in over sixty exhibitions.

 “Art and Soul: to Arouse, to Excite, to Inspire” was/will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary event in Canada this year on June 9 in Saskatoon, September 14 in Halifax, on September 21 in Lethbridge, and lastly on September 22 in Toronto.
