Growing up with chemically relaxed hair, black women were influenced by having straight, silky hair. Therefore, having a relaxed hair was the go-to answer. I began to realize this was not the natural me. I questioned my identity, my individuality, and what my hair said about me.

If you have never heard of the adage, “your hair is your crowning glory”, or, if you have, and wish to know more of this old-age wisdom, then “Life Is a Hair Way: Stop Natural Hair Breakage Using Simple Remedies and Helpful Solutions” by natural hair blogger Kerone Maxineau is the book you must abide.

Written in consonance with how race impacts the concept of beauty, the book chronicles the author’s journey of identity, individuality and how her natural hair is part and parcel of what she represents, how she represents and avoiding the missteps that a rapidly-changing society watches out for surreptitiously.

As she related, “My natural hair journey began in 2010, when I decided that I no longer wanted to chemically relax my hair. I was not following a trend, but a personal enlightenment.” The author shared that ever-common conflict of getting used to chemically relaxed hair as influenced by advertisements promoting straight, silky hair. Until one day, she finally decided against the cumbersome process.

More than of personal enlightenment, the book offers advice on hair care - from the wavy to the kinky hair with tips on prevention and treatment of hair breakage. Due to her own device of embracing her natural hair, she has learned, through a series of trial and errors, on how to best style aside from braiding and weaving.

Inspired with her personal triumph, she writes more on hair products, natural remedies and maintaining a healthy, shiny, moisture-rich, dazzling natural hair. She wisely advises an established hair care regimen that works best.

This is a light read on an issue that branches off to other relevant struggles that African-Americans face and handle on a daily basis. Kerone Maxineau has tapped into a reading market that is often overlooked, until now.

“Life Is a Hair Way: Stop Natural Hair Breakage Using Simple Remedies and Helpful Solutions” will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary events in Canada this year on September 14 in Halifax, on September 21 in Lethbridge, and lastly on September 22 in Toronto.
