Unfortunately, too many schools in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean face a myriad of challenges that impact indoor air quality and a healthy learning environment.

Across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, students and teachers are returning to classrooms this month for the start of the new school year. As the school year begins, a healthy indoor environment is crucial for students and faculty to be able to effectively learn and teach.

A key component to a healthy indoor environment is indoor air quality (IAQ). Many root causes of IAQ problems in schools could be prevented through preventive maintenance activities and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released new guidance materials to help schools create healthy indoor environments. Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools: Preventive Maintenance Guidance is filled with helpful information and joins the EPA’s growing suite of documents and resources designed to improve IAQ. The guide walks school administrators, teachers and facility maintenance professionals through straightforward steps to develop and implement a sustainable IAQ preventive maintenance plan to help create healthy, reliable and efficient school buildings.

The EPA makes the case for healthy schools in the new guidance document with the following statement: Ensuring the school environment is healthy is essential because the health and comfort of students and staff are among the many factors that contribute to learning and productivity in the classroom, which in turn affect performance and achievement. Children especially are vulnerable to poor environmental conditions, and being exposed to such contaminants early in life can cause health problems well into adulthood. Indoor pollutants in schools include mold, dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, lead, asbestos, PCBs, pesticides, secondhand smoke and others. Some of these pollutants can cause or exacerbate such health issues as allergies, respiratory illnesses like asthma and infectious diseases like the flu.

“Unfortunately, too many schools in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean face a myriad of challenges that impact indoor air quality and a healthy learning environment,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Tight operating budgets can have a big impact on preventive maintenance in schools, but hopefully this new EPA tool can help turn that around by showing the importance of effective preventive maintenance and how it actually saves money in the long run.”
