“Scourged Souls” is more than just a recollection of the Civil War.

Quote: Family life was important to the Wilkersons, and Nell and her brother were close with their parents.

The family is the most important unit in a society. Remove one member from it and everything will change.

Almost each chapter in Keith Corman’s book “Scourged Souls” depicts a family either anticipated or harrowed by the impending American Civil War.

In Chapter 2, Elizabeth’s family was about to have a dinner among themselves and at one point, Mrs. Wilkerson fondly remembered her son Kenneth. Nell reminisced how they used to play when they were young and Kenneth always viewed himself as a soldier. Now that Kenneth joined the Union and the “Iron Brigade,” their mother would cry silently when she read the letter of his beloved son. Nell’s father also decided to raise a regiment for the Union cause and lead them into battle, and her mother is proud about it. Elizabeth would be happy now that Mr. Wilkerson could be reunited with his son.

In Chapter 3, Auggie’s family shunned the thought of politics and war. Auggie wanted to join the Union and fight the war but his parents were stubborn and hardheaded every time he opens up about it. Instead, Auggie’s parents always wanted him to take care of their farm instead of going out to war to defend and kill. But one day, Auggie’s father finally approved of joining the Union, but his mother would fight off the tears because Auggie is leaving.

The two chapters showed different emotions. In Chapter 2, the family members were supportive of the father’s decision to join the Union while in Chapter 3, the family was hesitant of the son enlisting for the troop. But both chapters demonstrated a common theme: that no matter what happens, each member of the family is valued so much and the departure of one member could either lead to encouragement or sorrow.
