Lead and Asbestos Discovered at Proposed Bakersfield Police Academy

LA Testing offers analytical services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead and asbestos exposure risks from environments samples and bulk materials.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, KGET broadcasted a report about the discovery of lead and asbestos in floor tiles in a building being converted into a police academy in Bakersfield, California. According to the station, the former restaurant was undergoing demolition and remodeling when the hazardous materials were found. In response, the city is skipping the normal bidding process to hire a company to have the materials safely removed as quickly as possible.

Anytime there is demolition or remodeling in an older building there could be hazards present. Asbestos is frequently found in these situations because it was used in so many buildings constructed up until the late 1970s. It can be found in building materials ranging from insulation, roofing and siding to vinyl floor tiles, cement sheets and adhesives to name just a few of the many common asbestos-containing materials.

Lead is also a potential hazard due to its presence in lead-based paints, ceramics and other materials that were used for decades. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that there is no known safe level of lead exposure and that even low levels may cause lifelong health problems.”

“Exposure to asbestos fibers or lead can lead to serious health concerns, this is why there are regulations in place to help prevent people from coming into contact with these substances,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “To help identify potential asbestos and lead hazards, LA Testing offers analyses from building materials and air, dust, soil and surface samples. We also provide all of the sampling supplies needed, easy-to-use test kits and even carry a comprehensive line of personal protective equipment (PPE).”
