Over 455,000 visitors to Rijksmuseum’s All the Rembrandts exhibition

WEBWIRE

The final visitor visitor tally for the ’All the Rembrandts’ exhibition exceeded 455,000. The museum used a timeslot system to ensure everything ran smoothly, and visitors gave the exhibition an average 8.1 rating on a 10 point scale. The Whitsun holiday weekend was the last opportunity to see all 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and the 400 best prints by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum collection. The museum extended its opening times from 9:00 to 21:00 on both days.

Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum: “It’s been fantastic to see the level of interest in Rembrandt. We’ve learned from our last major Rembrandt exhibition in 2015 and chose to keep visitor numbers somewhat lower. It meant that every half hour we could regulate the flow of visitors to ensure everyone’s visit was as pleasant as possible.”

Rembrandt lives!

Rembrandt’s appeal is alive and well, 350 years after the artist’s death. The proof is there in the large number of exhibition-goers for All the Rembrandts, as well as in visitor use of educational resources and participation in activities accompanying the exhibition:

  • All the guided tours, concerts, lectures and Rijksmuseum Friend events sold out.
  • 45,000 visitors either downloaded the exhibition multimedia tour to the Rijksmuseum App or rented it in the museum.
  • 2,000 new Friends signed up and immediately took advantage of priority access to the exhibition.
  • All four Rembrandt books published by the Rijksmuseum this year have been a great success, with Biography of a rebel and the comprehensive catalogue Rembrandt x Rijksmuseum and Miffy x Rembrandt selling 11,000, 3,000, 6,200 and 9,000 copies respectively.

Two more exhibitions to come

All the Rembrandts was the first of three Rijksmuseum exhibitions marking the Year of Rembrandt.
From 15 July to 15 September, Long Live Rembrandt presents a selection from the more than 8,000 artworks submitted by the general public.
From 11 October 2019 to 19 January 2020, Rijksmuseum presents Rembrandt – Velázquez: Dutch and Spanish Masters, with masterpieces by Rembrandt’s contemporaries from Prado Museum in Madrid.
The biggest ever research study of the The Night Watch commences on July 8, and will be watched by members of the visiting public.

Curation and support

All the Rembrandts ran from 15 February to 10 June 2019 in the Rijksmuseum’s Philips Wing. Erik Hinterding, the Rijksmuseum’s curator of prints, curated the exhibition. Exhibition design was by Irma Boom. All the Rembrandts was made possible in part by the Blockbuster Fund, ING, and the Patrons of the Rijksmuseum.
